Why It Matters on UK Sites
Year after year, falls from height account for the largest share of worker deaths in construction. Most of these falls are not from great heights or exotic situations. They happen from ladders, through fragile roof lights, off unprotected edges, and from working platforms that were not put together properly. The common thread is that the fall was preventable. A guardrail that was removed and not put back, a ladder footed on soft ground, a scaffold used before it was inspected, a fragile surface someone assumed would take their weight. This talk exists because the difference between a normal day and a life-changing injury is often one shortcut that felt harmless at the time.
The Key Points to Cover
Work through the hierarchy of controls, because it is the backbone of safe work at height and it is easy to remember once the crew has heard it a few times.
- Avoid it. Ask whether the work at height is necessary at all. Can the task be done from the ground? Can components be assembled at ground level and lifted into place? The safest fall is the one that cannot happen.
- Prevent the fall. Where you must work at height, use collective protection first: a properly erected scaffold, a mobile tower, a mobile elevating work platform, or a working platform with guardrails, toe boards, and a stable base.
- Minimise the consequences. Where a fall risk still remains, reduce the distance and effect of a fall using nets, soft landing systems, or a personal fall arrest system with a suitable anchor point.
- Check the equipment. Ladders, towers, and platforms must be the right kind for the task, in good condition, and set up correctly. A pre-use check takes seconds and catches most problems.
- Watch the edges and openings. Open edges, floor voids, stairwells, and fragile surfaces are where people fall. They must be protected with guardrails, covers that are fixed and labelled, or barriers.

Talk through the hazards that apply to the work on your site right now. Here are the ones that come up most often.
- Ladders used badly. Ladders are for short-duration, light work only. Control: maintain three points of contact, foot the ladder or tie it off, use it on firm level ground, and never overreach. For anything longer, use a tower or platform.
- Fragile roofs and roof lights. Roof lights and old asbestos cement sheets will not take a person's weight. Control: never step on a fragile surface, use crawl boards and staging, and fit covers or barriers over roof lights.
- Unprotected edges. Control: fit double guardrails and toe boards to all open edges and leading edges before anyone works near them.
- Scaffold used before inspection. Control: check the scaffold tag. Green means inspected and safe to use, red means do not use. Scaffolds must be inspected before first use and at least every seven days.
- Falling objects. Tools and materials dropped from height injure people below. Control: use toe boards, brick guards, tool lanyards, and exclusion zones underneath the work.
- Weather. Wind, ice, and rain make platforms and ladders dangerous. Control: stop work at height in high winds and clear ice and standing water before starting.

Attendance and Sign-Off
Finish by recording the talk. You need to be able to show that the briefing was delivered, when, by whom, and who was there. Write down the topic (working at height), the date, the name of the person delivering it, and a signature from every worker who attended. Note any actions that came out of the discussion, such as a damaged ladder to be removed or a missing guardrail to be reinstated, and make sure someone owns each one.
