Scaffolding Inspection Requirements

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 (Regulation 12) requires that scaffolding is inspected:

Before being used for the first time — after erection or substantial alteration
At intervals not exceeding 7 days — recorded on Form SG4 or equivalent
After any event likely to have affected stability — wind over 40mph, impact damage, partial dismantling

Inspections must be carried out by a competent person — typically someone holding CISRS Advanced Scaffolding certification or equivalent.

What Must Be Recorded?

Inspection reports must include:

Name and address of the person for whom the inspection was carried out
Location and description of the scaffold
Date and time of the inspection
Details of any matters identified that could give rise to risk
Details of any action taken as a result
Name and position of the person making the report

Reports must be kept on site until the scaffold is dismantled, and retained for 3 months after that.
