Scaffolding must be inspected before first use, after any alteration, after adverse weather, and at least every 7 days per the Work at Height Regulations 2005. This 20-point checklist aligns with TG20:13 and BS EN 12811 standards to help you carry out a thorough inspection.
Confirm scaffold has been erected by a CISRS-qualified scaffolder and a handover certificate is in place
Verify the scaffold design matches the current TG20 compliance sheet or bespoke design drawings
Inspect base plates and sole boards: level, properly seated, adequate load distribution
Check standards (uprights) are plumb, evenly spaced, and free from visible damage or corrosion
Inspect ledgers and transoms: secure connections, correct spacing, no bent or cracked tubes
Verify all couplers are tight and correctly fitted (right-angle, swivel, putlog as appropriate)
Check bracing: diagonal braces in place as per design, facade bracing where required
Inspect ties: anchored to the structure at specified intervals, no missing or loose ties
Verify all working platforms are fully boarded with no gaps greater than 25mm
Check platform boards are in good condition: no splits, warping, or excessive wear
Confirm guard rails at 950mm, mid-rails, and toe boards (150mm min) are in place on all open sides
Inspect ladder access: secured at top and bottom, extends 1m above platform, correct angle
Verify loading does not exceed the scaffold design capacity (check signage)
Check for unauthorised modifications: no missing components, no ad-hoc alterations
Inspect sheeting or netting: securely fixed, not causing excessive wind loading
Verify warning signage is in place: load limits, incomplete scaffold tags where applicable
Check proximity to overhead power lines: minimum clearance distances maintained
Inspect ground conditions beneath scaffold for subsidence, water pooling, or undermining
Confirm scaffold is not being used as a crane loading bay unless specifically designed for it
Complete the scaffold inspection register with date, findings, inspector name, and CISRS number
