Hot works including welding, cutting, grinding, and brazing are a leading cause of construction site fires. A formal hot works permit system is required under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Use this 15-point checklist every time hot works are carried out.
Confirm a written hot works permit has been issued and signed by the site manager or competent person
Verify the operative is trained and competent for the specific hot work being carried out
Clear all combustible materials within a minimum 10-metre radius of the work area
Cover or protect any combustible surfaces, cables, or materials that cannot be removed with fire-resistant blankets
Check for flammable vapours, gases, or dust in the area and confirm gas testing if required
Ensure a suitable fire extinguisher (minimum 9L water or 6kg dry powder) is within 2 metres of the work
Confirm a trained fire watch person is assigned and will remain for at least 60 minutes after works cease
Isolate or protect any nearby fire detection or sprinkler systems (with fire alarm controller notified)
Verify the work area has adequate ventilation, especially in enclosed or confined spaces
Check that all welding and cutting equipment is in good condition with valid inspection records
Ensure appropriate PPE is worn: welding visor/goggles, flame-resistant clothing, gauntlets
Confirm gas cylinders are upright, secured, and regulators/flashback arrestors are fitted and tested
Verify the permit specifies exact location, duration, and type of hot work permitted
Brief all nearby workers on the hot works taking place and emergency procedures
On completion, carry out a final fire watch, confirm the area is cold, and close out the permit with a signature
