How to Run a Construction Site Induction [Checklist]

7 steps | Updated March 2026

Step 1: Prepare induction materials

Before the induction, prepare your materials: site rules document, emergency procedures, site plan showing welfare facilities and assembly points, sign-in sheet, and any site-specific documentation (asbestos register, permit procedures).

Step 2: Check competency and right to work

Verify CSCS cards, any required tickets or certificates, and right to work documentation. Record card numbers and expiry dates. Do not allow anyone on site without valid competency evidence.

Step 3: Cover site-specific rules

Walk through site rules: working hours, PPE requirements, smoking areas, parking, welfare facilities, restricted areas, and any site-specific policies (e.g., no radios, phone restrictions, drug and alcohol policy).

Step 4: Explain emergency procedures

Cover: fire alarm location and sound, evacuation routes, assembly point location, first aider names and locations, accident reporting procedure, emergency contact numbers, and nearest A&E department.

Step 5: Walk the site

Take the inductee on a physical walk of the site. Show them welfare facilities, first aid points, fire points, assembly points, access routes, and any active hazards. Point out restricted areas and ongoing high-risk activities.

Step 6: Issue PPE and verify

Ensure the inductee has all required PPE and that it fits properly. Standard minimum: hard hat, high-vis vest, safety boots, eye protection, gloves. Add task-specific PPE as required.

Step 7: Complete paperwork and sign off

Get the inductee to sign the induction record confirming they have understood all information provided. File the record securely — this is your evidence of compliance with CDM 2015 training requirements.
